Los Angeles, January 5, 2017: Old-Time music instrumentalists David Bragger and Susan Platz are releasing the first ever CD of 100% pure double fiddle music played in the American old-time tradition. The CD will be released on Tiki Parlour Records February 2, 2017
David and Susan have recorded 15 duets of classic old-time tunes performed with the classic rhythms, drones and nuances of old-time fiddle preachers including Ed Haley, Mel Durham, French Carpenter, Dock Roberts, Sarah Armstrong, K.C. Kartchner, and Glen Fannin. KING’S LAMENT features classic and rare tunes from Texas, Illinois, Ohio, Kentucky, West Virginia, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, and Arizona.
“These fiddle tunes, some very rare and some classic, are pieces that reflect my repertoire since the time that I began studying under the aged masters. They are performed in a variety of old authentic tunings that are unknown to both the contemporary violinist and modern Nashville bluegrass fiddler. For this album, we recorded these strange evocative tunes with rhythmic, droney harmony fiddle that would have been found 100 years ago in the forgotten realms of the Cajuns and the haunting playing of the Swedish and Norwegian fiddle traditions. It is a perfect marriage of ancient tradition and creativity for us, which is of paramount importance since this is the first CD of its kind in old-time music,” says Bragger.
"After we made the decision to record a fiddle duet album, says Susan, the process went something like this: we would each come up with ideas here and there… “Hey, how about this tune?” and then we would play it a little, and I would start improvising a little bit of harmony… then he would make suggestions… we’d go back and forth… it was a really fun process. At times it was difficult to find a harmony that was both creative and true to the traditional style, but by working together, things eventually fell into place nicely. We match each other well, and I think we’ve made some pretty beautiful sounds together!”
